SSG President Art Stewart has been invited to deliver a presentation on a paper he authored looking at President George W. Bush’s MBA leadership style at a major conference next April. Stewart’s paper, “The MBA Goes to Washington:  Reflections on the Leadership Style of the CEO President” was first produced in 2006 for Professor E.J. Dionne’s “Politics and the Media” course as part of Stewart’s mid-career graduate program at Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute. The conference presentation will include updated material with Power Point illustration.
Stewart will present at the Massachusetts School of Law presidency conference, Chasing Success or Courting Failure, April 26-27 in Andover, Massachusetts.
Stewart, who has counseled an array of corporate and public leaders as head of his own consulting firm since 1993, holds a post-graduate certificate in Senior Executive Leadership from Georgetown in addition to the pending award of a Master’s in Policy Management degree next May.
The presentation will probe the experiences that converged to inform the leadership style of the nation’s CEO president. It will inquire if leadership skills honed within a business context translate to the formation and implementation of effective public policy. It will look at how George W. Bush has applied his management training to governing, and how successfully he has communicated his agenda in the new era of ‘affirmation journalism’; niche, mixed media; the disenfranchised media elite; and today’s polarizing ‘argument culture’.

Components of the presentation include: Leading in business vs. making the business of government work; The ironic Bush - B-school training, faith, and a dubious career history; Focus, decide and delegate; Cracks in the veneer; and Managing the message is managing the agenda?
